McDonogh Mission Statement

McDonogh School is a community that finds joy in work, in play, and in the discovery and realization of personal potential. Strong, mutually respectful relationships among and between students and teachers inspire a passion for learning, a dedication to personal integrity, and a commitment to excellence. Embracing diversity of background, culture, and thought, the school builds upon its founder's original mission to provide a life-altering opportunity to develop in its students the will "to do the greatest possible amount of good."

McDonogh Mission and Philosophy Statement

Enrollment

A coeducational day and boarding college preparatory school, McDonogh currently enrolls 1,296 students from kindergarten though twelfth grade.

Faculty and Administration

  • The headmaster since 2007 is Charles W. Britton.
  • McDonogh employs the equivalent of 157 full-time faculty members, 25% of whom live on campus.
  • More than 80% of faculty hold advanced degrees, and the average teaching tenure is 15.3 years.
  • The student-teacher ratio is 9:1.

Campus

  • Founded in 1873 as a farm school for poor boys, McDonogh School is situated on nearly 800 pastoral acres in suburban Owings Mills.
  • The campus is located 20 minutes from downtown Baltimore and 50 minutes from Washington, D.C.
  • Tuition (includes bus transportation and hot lunch): Lower School $21,000; Middle School $22,300; Upper School $23,370; Upper School Five-day Boarding, $31,420.

Financial Aid

McDonogh awarded almost $3.5 million in need-based financial aid for 2009-2010. The average award exceeded $10,000.

Academic Facilities

Each school is housed in its own building with a library, technology centers, science laboratories, and art facilities.

Arts Facilities

  • The Clarence A. Burck Center for the Performing Arts includes a 580-seat theatre, a black box theatre, a scene shop, a band room, and classroom space for drama and music
  • The Tuttle Art Gallery
  • Music, art, and dance studios

Athletic Facilities

  • The Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center includes a multipurpose area for indoor athletics, a wrestling room, a classroom, and the Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. Aquatic Center with 50-meter, indoor pool.
  • Riding facilities include a 70-stall barn, four outdoor riding rings, and the Eagle's Nest indoor riding arena.
  • Outdoor facilities also include a 5,000-seat stadium, 20 tennis courts, 19 fields, and a 400-meter track.

Transportation

McDonogh operates a fleet of 24 buses daily with community stops in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, and Carroll counties as well as Baltimore City.
