Project Green

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. -John McDonogh’s Rules for Living
We believe that a commitment to a sustainable future for McDonogh is central to the true philosophy of this school as envisioned by its founder, John McDonogh. …The concept of “global citizenship” is closely tied to sustainability. It is becoming a more and more important part of our curriculum and daily practices as we begin to realize how closely the actions of all people on this earth affect one another. -Sustainability Committee, Campus Master Plan

The school’s green practices continue to expand.

  • GAP recycling — the combined collection of glass, aluminum, and #1 and #2 grade plastics — is in place in all three divisions and the field house.
  • Paper recycling is in place campus-wide.
  • The dining hall is now tray-less, which saves two ways. Food waste is reduced, as is the energy cost of washing trays.
  • The transportation department is testing an oil purification system on one of our school buses. These vehicles may be able to go many more miles without the need for an oil change.
  • The maintenance department is testing motion-sensitive lighting.
  • Our fields are treated with environmentally sensitive fertilizers and other products.
  • Our housekeeping department is using green products in the kindergarten, Elderkin Hall, and field house. These products will be in use campus-wide by summer.

The Middle School continues to lead McDonogh in sustainable practices. Since the Maryland Department of Natural Resources awarded it the “Green School” designation in 2006, students and teachers have employed creative ways to save resources. A Green Team of students works to raise awareness of environmental issues. As one example, the group sponsors blackouts one day a month to reduce classroom energy use.

Of course, don't forget about McDonogh Roots! This project, started in the winter of 2008-2009, aims to bring farming and some self-sustainability back to McDonogh's campus. The Roots team has already planted potatoes, tomatoes, and pumpkins, and is currently investigating organic farming practices, composting, and sustainable outreach throughout the school community.
