Reunion Weekend 2022 featured two special events that remembered and honored the enslaved peoples of John McDonogh whose labor contributed to his wealth and led to the founding of McDonogh School. On Friday, April 29, as part of the McDonogh Voices series, alumni Nile Russell ’00, Naana Badu ’00, Jenn Ford ’00, and current students performed a dance that highlighted the dichotomy and complexity of McDonogh (the person and the School), the importance of creating greatness in difficult times, and a forward vision of the McDonogh community’s future. Watch the performance.
The following day, alumni gathered at The Memorial to Those Enslaved and Freed for a special dedication ceremony featuring traditional African dancing and drumming, a libation ritual, a reading of names of the enslaved inscribed on the walls of the memorial, and remarks by the artist, retired Art Department Chair Oletha DeVane. After the ceremony, guests filled the Klein Lyceum for the premiere of a documentary on the creation of The Memorial to Those Enslaved and Freed produced by Emmy Award-winning journalist, filmmaker, and writer Robin Hamilton ‘91.
