Students Compete in MS Geography Bee

All Middle School students gathered in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on January 9 to watch 25 of their classmates compete in the finals of McDonogh's 15th Annual Geography Bee. The anticipation and excitement was the same as it is each year, the only visible difference was that everyone was decked out in purple in support of the Ravens playoff game the next day.

The contestants secured a spot on stage by first becoming the champion in their social studies class. For an hour and a half the finalists were quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events geography. The questions became more difficult with each round.

In the end it came down to two eighth graders, Josh V. and Sam M. Josh was declared the champion after he confidently replied "Philadelphia" to the question: Which large U.S. city is located at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers?

Each year, more than 6,000,000 middle schoolers nationwide participate in the annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Josh will take a written test to determine if he qualifies to compete at the state level in the spring. A victory at the state level would send him to the National Geography Bee finals held in Washington, D.C. in May.
