McDonogh Serves As Pop-Up Market Pickup Location

You are quarantined. You want to feed your family fresh fruits and vegetables but, these days it's just not that easy. Baltimore County Together has a solution and a way to help food distributors and others along the supply chain who are impacted by the coronavirus. It’s a digital curbside Pop-Up Market and McDonogh is one of a number of sites throughout the county serving as a pickup location.

On Saturday, April 4, standing at an appropriate distance from each other, McDonogh volunteers loaded pre-packed boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables into the cars of more than 100 customers who had ordered online through Baltimore County Together days earlier. The cost of a 15 pound box is $20 and the campaign also accepts donations for produce kits for those in need. Orders must be placed by Wednesday for pick up on Saturday.

Tim Bojanowski, who is helping coordinate the effort, spoke about the impact of donations saying, "McDonogh donations alone sponsored  roughly 100 families, all of whom had reached out for support. Most of them had specified that they are unemployed for the first time and don't believe they qualify for support or are awaiting information while also trying to feed families during a time of growing food insecurity." He noted that there were a lot of single moms, as well as families with both heads of households now unemployed as well as senior citizens and disabled people.

"We also were able to get a few dozen boxes into local senior centers, more to police and fire stations, and prepared dinners from Nalley Fresh to 100 individuals. We tried to use those mostly to get to hospital workers and other emergency response workers. However, there were a number that were delivered to doorsteps to families currently quarantined having tested positive for the virus and unable to go out to get food or groceries," Bojanowski continued.
