As US English teacher Nick Rego prepared to transition his Horror in Literature class to online learning, it was important to him to keep the type of hands-on, creative activities that allowed his students to apply the concepts they learned in class. He quickly devised a project that would challenge his students to prove their understanding and command of the horror genre.
A spring senior elective, Horror in Literature analyzes the elements of the horror genre across a variety of mediums. Along with studying classic horror novels such as Dracula, the class also delves into short stories as well as the way horror elements translate to television and film. For their first project in a virtual space, Rego asked his students to create a short scene using a mundane space in a way that used both content and form to clearly signify it as a horror scene. With a doorway as their prompt, Rego's students used purposeful lighting, practical effects, editing tricks, and sound effects to create a variety of horror scenes that proved they had a true command of the genre.
