Amanda Alonso-Valenteen, Upper School Spanish Teacher

What inspired you to become a teacher?

Photographer: Reid Swirnow '26

My mother is a Spanish teacher, and she inspired me to become one as well.

Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?

I chose to teach Spanish because I am from Spain, and I am passionate about sharing my culture and my native language.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?

I  love seeing my students' smiles and the joy they have learning Spanish and being in my classroom.

How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?

I make sure I get to know my students as well as I can. I want my students to feel comfortable in my classroom and with me. When learning a foreign language, you want students to make mistakes (especially when they are speaking); it is the only way they will learn it well.

Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you’re passionate about?

I love my family and do everything for them. Every weekend, I become a soccer mom and/or a lacrosse mom. We do a lot of activities together as a family, and we take time to disconnect from our daily routines.

What do you hope students will take away from your classes or your mentorship?

I hope they remember my classroom and learning Spanish with me. I hope they take all the happy moments in Spanish class with them through life.

How do you recharge and find inspiration when you’re not in the classroom?

I take some long weekends off as well as the majority of the summer to go to St. Mary's (southern Maryland) or the Outer Banks with my best friends (my college friends who ended up being my bridesmaids). I find so much positive energy with them that I feel recharged when I return home. We have a very special bond.

Do you have a favorite place on campus? What makes it your favorite?

Yes, I would say the trails and walkways through campus. On the weekends, I come here with my dog, Luna. We usually walk a couple of miles together. I love spending time with nature and breathing fresh air.
