What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?

The look in a student's eyes when they learn something new. When students learn something new, their eyes become wide and filled with curiosity (especially in the fifth grade). I love it when they ask questions that are slightly off-topic but still involve the subject matter; some of the best in-class discussions happen when they ask questions 'deeper' than the content material. As a Spanish teacher, I not only teach the language, but I also teach about people and their culture. It makes me happy to see them interested in the lives of others.

Are there any memorable or impactful moments in your teaching career that stand out to you?

For a good portion of last year, a student asked me for extra and more challenging work at the end of each class. The student loved doing Duolingo every night at home and then sharing with me what he learned the following day. He is in the sixth grade now and hugs me every time we see each other.

Last year, I taught the daughter of my sophomore-year Spanish teacher, Señora A.V. That was a pretty cool moment.

How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?

I am honest with them. I tell them about my journey as a Spanish learner and life in general. I showed them my freshman year report card while I was here in the Upper School; I told them that I didn't do well in my Spanish 2 Honors class, but I ended up a Spanish teacher due to my diligence and “sticktoitiveness.” I hope being honest with them will lead them to be honest with themselves and take responsibility for their learning. The kids I teach are young, so I don't want them to be discouraged after failing or making mistakes.

Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you're passionate about?

I am passionate about family, music, video games, and reading mainly autobiographies and memoirs. I enjoy listening to music: Motown, late 60s/early 70s Soul, Michael Jackson, and some hip-hop/rap. I also like to write song lyrics and make music on my computer (Garage Band). I enjoy spending time with my family; quality time with them recharges my social meter. I've been playing video games since I was seven years old; I have a YouTube channel where I occasionally post clips and informational videos.
