What inspired you to become a teacher?

Photographer: Harrison Schniedwind '26

I've always known that teaching was the profession for me. I have several teachers in my family, and they all inspire me. I'm also a lifelong learner who loves children.

Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?

I enjoy discovering as much as I can about how each child learns. In my role, I have the pleasure of working with the children I am most drawn to: those with diverse strengths and areas for growth. Identifying the strategies and resources that will help them thrive is a puzzle I love solving. I am passionate about Universal Design for Learning — creating an inclusive learning environment for all children.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?

Teaching gives me an outlet for creativity. As I design instruction, children bring unique challenges and perspectives that require me to shift and adapt my plans. I enjoy the cycle of designing, implementing, and reflecting. And nothing beats when something "clicks" —  after a child has mastered a concept I've taught them and can independently apply it to novel situations.

Are there any memorable or impactful moments in your teaching career that stand out to you?

I cherish the moments when my former students reach out to update me on their lives. Recently, I've been hearing from some of my students who are in college now, and they still hold dear to memories from my class. To know that I've had a lasting impact on a child's life is the greatest gift.

How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?

I make personal connections with each child and use that to my advantage. I use books that connect to each child's interests and culture to draw them in, or I'll write passages with their names and their friends' names. These little touches go a long way with engagement! I also incorporate interactive learning structures and activities kids love into each lesson — knowing children developmentally is critical to designing appropriately challenging and engaging instruction.

Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you're passionate about?

I love to read, run, and bake.

What do you hope students will take away from your classes or your mentorship?

I hope they take away that with hard work and strategies, they can do anything! I hope my students will always remember that I believed in them.

Do you have a quote that inspires you?

"The teacher is, of course, an artist, but being an artist doesn't mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves." - Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

How do you recharge and find inspiration when you're not in the classroom?

I spend time with my family! Nothing brings me more joy than spending quality time with my children. I love reading with them, playing with them, and going on adventures. My children find beauty in everyday things (like the sunset or even leaves and sticks!), and they remind me to slow down, look, listen, and enjoy each day.

Do you have a favorite place on campus? What makes it your favorite?

I love running McDonogh's cross-country course. It's a gorgeous route that weaves through beautiful mature trees, the corn fields, and the edge of campus. It's so peaceful. I also love Shell Road, especially in October!
