General Summary

The Substitute Teacher provides adult supervision and educational support to students in the absence of their regular Teacher. This is a long term substitute teaching position (estimated January- April) in the 4th grade and the person filling this role will carry the general day to day responsibilities of a faculty member within the Lower School Division.

Essential Functions

  • Responsibilities included in managing a fourth-grade classroom:
  • Design and implement engaging daily lesson plans aligned with school curriculum across core subjects (Literacy, Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies), incorporating differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs and maintaining appropriate pacing throughout the academic year
  • Create a positive, structured learning environment that promotes student engagement and social-emotional development through clear expectations, consistent classroom management strategies (Responsive Classroom experience desired), and age-appropriate behavioral support for fourth-grade students transitioning into fifth-grade responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver interactive lessons using a mix of traditional and digital tools, including NovoTouch technology, educational apps, and online learning platforms to enhance student understanding of complex concepts and foster digital literacy skills appropriate for 9-10 year olds
  • Actively supervise students during transition periods, lunch, recess, and special activities while building positive relationships, monitoring social dynamics, and ensuring safety protocols are followed, particularly as fourth graders develop greater independence
  • Collaborate with grade-level team members, learning support team members, counselor, and administrators to develop comprehensive support plans for students requiring intervention or enrichment, and address specific academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs through regular collaboration meetings
  • Maintain detailed documentation of student progress, including daily work samples, formative and summative assessments, literacy and math competencies and behavioral observations using the school's learning management system to track growth and inform instruction
  • Build strong parent partnerships through regular communication via email, newsletters, and conferences, providing specific feedback about academic progress, social development, and grade-level expectations while addressing concerns proactively and professionally

Recommended Employment Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years teaching in an Elementary/Lower School setting . Bachelors Degree.

Additional Experience

  • Academic teaching experience, preferred
  • Experience working in a student-centered learning environment, with practical experience with problem- and project-based learning, as well as integrated learning
  • Must have an understanding of Google Suite tools (docs, sheets, forms etc.), major LMS platforms, and other emerging technologies
  • Working knowledge of HRIS/HRMS software, experience with Paycom preferred

Working Conditions

Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Reaching, grasping. Talking, hearing, tasting or smelling.
