General Summary

Essential Functions

  • Clean building floors and stairwells by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them
  • Collect and empty trash, cleaning trash cans as necessary
  • Service and supply restrooms
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, paying mind to prevent damage to floors, fixtures, and injury to persons
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after completing cleaning duties that occur after operating hours. Observe for electrical hazards and report as necessary
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies either manually or by using hand trucks as needed to clean under or behind
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Set up and clean after events by providing trash cans with liners, emptying trash cans, keeping restrooms clean, picking up spills and items on floors and tables during and after events
  • Provide set up assistance to maintenance department when asked by your supervisor or the Facilities Director. This may include setting up tables, chairs, etc. to prepare for events such as banquets, graduation ceremonies, sporting events, dances, meetings, etc...
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures throughout your assigned building area
  • Clean windows, glass partitions and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, rags and squeegees
  • Dust or wet wash all furniture, walls, machines, water fountains, light fixtures, and fans.
  • Mix water and detergents in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to product specifications
  • Steam clean, Bonnet, or shampoo carpets
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors
  • Clean and restore building interiors that may be damaged by fire, smoke, or water using commercial cleaning equipment in the event of an emergency
  • Clean laboratory equipment such as glassware, porcelain, stainless steel, hard surfaces such as floors, walls, and metal instruments using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment when appropriate

Recommended Employment Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent.

  • Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.
  • Must have a valid drivers license to be able to drive vehicles as required to perform duties, traveling to other areas of campus, picking up trash, and/or moving equipment. Report any safety issues or malfunctioning vehicles or equipment.
  • Must have availability and flexibility to work at least 5 special events per year (above and beyond regular schedule) and all three graduation ceremonies unless you have previous arrangements with your supervisor or have a child graduating the same day
  • Must have reliable transportation to work on the McDonogh School campus in Owings Mills, MD
  • Must possess personal qualifications as required, flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene and physical and mental health that do not interfere with responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Climbing. Driving in various travel situations, including severe weather occasionally. Evening, weekend, and Holiday hours may be required. Lifting of at least 50 pounds. Reaching, grasping. Standing. Stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling. The potential for exposure to blood/body fluid/tissue. The potential presence of fumes (airborne), toxic, or caustic chemicals. Walking around campus.
