Cynthia Cox - Upper School English Teacher - About - McDonogh School

Cynthia Cox, Upper School English Teacher

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I come from a family of teachers of all levels, from preschool to university, so teaching was always in my world.  When my plans to be a doctor changed senior year in college, I pursued this career in which I was interested.

Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?

English was my college major, and I have always loved to read and write.

Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you’re passionate about?

I love to sing and am a member of my community chorus; I love to travel; I love to cook and read and learn about food, especially in its cultural context.

What are some of your favorite books, movies, or quotes that inspire you?

I have never been able to choose a favorite book, as my tastes have changed over time, but one favorite book is Pride and Prejudice; one favorite movie is Some Like It Hot.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?

Long ago one of our professional day speakers said that teaching is like standing next to the fountain of youth, and I have to agree.  To teach is to believe in human potential.
