General Summary

McDonogh School seeks a dynamic educator to teach Upper School Biology, the third course in the school’s science sequence, with opportunities to teach additional courses in life sciences, scientific research, or other electives depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests. The ideal candidate will bring a genuine passion for the life sciences, embrace inquiry-based and project-based learning, and excel at fostering 21st-century skills. This role requires flexibility, collaboration, and a strong commitment to student-centered learning.

 

Essential Functions

  • Teaching and Curriculum Development
  • Inspire, engage, and encourage students in the study of life sciences through innovative and interactive teaching strategies
  • Value, promote, and develop the importance of effort and grit in students’ academic achievement; celebrating students’ effort and their incremental increases in achievement
  • Work in a student-centered learning environment where curiosity and collaboration are prioritized
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Work closely with colleagues teaching the same courses to ensure the same content coverage and ensure similar student experiences
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the science department and engage in interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Become an active member of the McDonogh community by participating in school activities inside and outside of the science department
  • Professional Growth and Contributions
  • Mentor a small group of students as an advisor in an advisory program as well as students inside the science classroom
  • Overtly support and act in accordance with the school's mission
  • Exhibit professional standards of presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion
  • Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, advisory programs, coaching, assigned supervision, and other areas as determined by the Head of the Upper School
  • Use professional growth opportunities to continually grow as a science educator, including but not limited to, observing classes taught by colleagues both within and outside of the science department

Recommended Employment Qualifications

Master’s Degree (preferred, but not required).

Additional Experience

  • Experience teaching in a neurodiverse environment (preferred, but not required)
  • Prior experience teaching biology is preferred

  • Ability to successfully work with and within a culturally diverse student body, staff, and community
  • Exhibits a strong work ethic
  • Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.
  • Must possess personal qualifications such as flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene, and physical and mental health that do not interfere with responsibilities

Working Conditions

Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor.
