McDonogh continues to send student diversity representatives to local and national conferences, where student leaders exchange ideas with their counterparts from other schools. Conference topics range from issues of class and race to gender and sexual orientation. See recent conferences below.
The NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC) is the flagship of the National Association of Independent Schools' commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development. The mission of the conference is to provide a safe space for leadership and professional development and networking for people of color and allies of all backgrounds in independent schools. PoCC equips educators at every level, from teachers to trustees, with knowledge, skills, and experiences to improve and enhance the interracial, interethnic, and intercultural climate in their schools, as well as the attending academic, social-emotional, and workplace performance outcomes for students and adults alike.
The BSDLC (Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference) is a regional diversity conference with students at the center. Students from regional independent schools attend a retreat and 6 planning sessions to create and facilitate workshops around a number of topics. This year, on Saturday, November 10, over 400 students from over 33 AIMS schools registered to attend. The student-led sessions were:
On August 16th, teachers and students from 16 area schools came together to prepare for the upcoming student-led Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference that will be held in Annapolis, MD in November of this year.
The programs were facilitated and planned in partnership between Higher Learning Group's dynamic leader, Kaliq Simms, and BCBOBS staff, and was generously sponsored by the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS).
