What inspired you to become a teacher?
My parents are my main inspiration for becoming an educator, even though they were not traditional classroom teachers. My mom has been working in college counseling for over 30 years, and my dad was a college football coach. Growing up, I admired the impact that my parents were able to have on young adults in their formative years. Whether it was helping someone academically, emotionally, or in other parts of their life, they always managed to leave a positive, long-lasting impression on those they encountered. The desire to have that same effect on people is the reason I got into teaching.
What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?
To me, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the positive impact that you can have on your students. I love hearing stories about my former students' progression and achievements, whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or anywhere else. The thought that I might have played some small role in helping them develop habits or skills that led to their success is an incredible feeling.
How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?
I believe the most important thing is having a positive relationship with the student. When students realize that you’re there for them and care about them, it really opens the door to learning. When you have that strong foundation, I find that the students are willing to work harder, be more open to feedback, and take extra pride in their achievements.
Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you’re passionate about?
Outside of the classroom, I am really interested in leadership. I enjoy learning about successful teams, coaches, entrepreneurs, and historical figures and discovering what led to their accomplishments, the type of culture they implemented, and the obstacles they had to overcome. I am incredibly passionate about coaching and love the different relationships you can have with students through sports.
What do you hope students will take away from your classes or your mentorship?
Beyond understanding the academic material in my class, I want students to leave with a growth mindset and a sense of resiliency. I want them to understand that challenges and setbacks are part of nearly everything you do and that you can achieve your goals through trial and error as long as you believe you can do it.
What are some of your favorite books, movies, or quotes that inspire you?
One of my favorite quotes is from Pat Summitt, the former head women’s basketball coach at Tennessee, who said, “They never care how much you know until they know how much you care.” To me, this just brings everything back to creating genuine, authentic relationships with the students and players you encounter daily. If they can tell that you genuinely want the best for them and are trying to help them, they’ll respond a whole lot better
