What inspired you to become a teacher?

Before I worked in education I worked at an investment bank and was the Director of Training and Development. I was a teacher for adults in the private industry. I started working with children/students about 18 years ago.

Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?

My youngest daughter is dyslexic and was diagnosed with dyslexia in first grade. I took classes so that I would better understand her learning challenges so that I could support her at home and advocate for her at school.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?

I really enjoy working with students and watching them discover not only the material but also their many skills and abilities once they connect with the material.  It is amazing to watch students excel.

How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?

We really try to make the Learning Center a place where students feel comfortable coming in and asking for assistance.

What do you hope students will take away from your classes or your mentorship?

I hope that students leave knowing more about themselves and also understanding what resources are available to them, and learning self-advocating skills to get the support needed. I hope that students feel empowered to be the best student he/she/they can be.

How do you recharge and find inspiration when you're not in the classroom?

I like spending time with friends and family, I also like to read a lot and take continuing education classes to stay current in my field.

What are some of your favorite books, movies, or quotes that inspire you?
