What inspired you to become a teacher?
This is easy for me. Since I was in first grade, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Valentine (yes, that was really her name!), made school and her classroom seem like a magical place and made me love going to school to learn. I wanted to do the same thing when I "grew up."
Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?
This is my 24th year teaching, and I've always worked with early childhood. During my tenure, I've either taught kindergarten or prekindergarten. I believe that I am helping children build an educational foundation for their academic careers. In these early years, I want children to develop a love for learning and have positive experiences at school. I love watching young children grow and learn.
What do you find most rewarding about teaching and working with students?
It is so rewarding to make an impact on the lives of my students. I love helping and watching children grow and seeing them make friends, discover new things, gain independence, and learn about the world around them. Every day is a new adventure in the life of a four- and five-year-old!
What do you hope students will take away from your classes or your mentorship?
I hope my students feel safe and loved in my classroom. I wish to inspire curiosity and a love of learning every day. I also hope they remember that hands-on learning and learning through play is fun and joyful!
Do you have a favorite place on campus? What makes it your favorite?
McDonogh is a special place for me. Not only was I a McDonogh student (I graduated in 1995), but I was married on campus! So, the Chapel is my favorite place! I also love to take my students to sled down Chapel Hill when it snows! We are so lucky to have such a beautiful campus.
