What inspired you to work at a school?

When I was a kid, I found so much support from teachers, counselors, and coaches in my school. I would not be where I am today without the foundation of adults who cared about me. I knew when I started in the social work and counseling field that schools were the place for me.

What do you find most rewarding about working with students/young people?

Young people have such amazing potential for growth and change. It’s such a great feeling to be able to see evidence of magnificent progress in the students I serve.

Are there any memorable or impactful moments in your job or time with McDonogh that stand out to you?

I was, and still am, in awe of the spirit parade before the McDonogh vs. Gilman game. I have never been at a school where everyone—the youngest kids, the oldest students, faculty, staff, parents, and alums—buys in and celebrates the school with such positive energy. I love seeing the young students cheer with excitement as they get high-fives from the Upper School athletes. It goes beyond school spirit; it’s school pride.

What do you hope students will learn from engaging with you?

I want all students to walk away knowing that sustaining and improving their mental health is key to a better quality of life. My biggest hope is that students will take away a feeling of support and new skills to help them better manage life’s challenging moments.

Outside of school, what are some of your interests or hobbies that you’re passionate about?

Tennis! I retired from football and basketball after college and fell in love with tennis as an adult. I help coach our varsity tennis teams and compete in USTA adult leagues in the Mid-Atlantic Region. I’m so fortunate to have found a sport that activated my joy of learning new things.

What are some of your favorite quotes that inspire you?

“I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
— Dr. William Ernest Henley

“Ever tried, ever failed, no matter; try again, fail again, fail better.”
— Samuel Beckett

How do you recharge and find inspiration when you’re not at school?

I am inspired when I spend time with my family, play tennis, and coach my son in basketball. I also enjoy the peace and solitude of bass fishing. Being around the people I care about gives me the opportunity to recharge when life is at its busiest.

Do you have a favorite place on campus? What makes it your favorite?

Our magnificent tennis courts are my favorite place on campus. I get to spend a lot of time on the courts helping students learn to play the game that I love. When I am not helping the students learn to play, I go back to the courts and hit around to improve my craft and relieve some stress.
