History came to life for the fifth grade as they had the opportunity to meet with former Negro Baseball League players and representatives from the Buffalo Soldiers. The two groups came to McDonogh on Friday, February 8, to speak with the students who have been researching and discussing the organizations and their histories. The much-anticipated visit, now in its 12th year, included remarks from Rayner Banks, Negro League ambassador and historian; and former Negro League players Fred Valentine (Washington Senators and Baltimore Orioles) and Luther Atkinson (Wilson All-Stars, Carolina Tigers, and Satchel Paige All-Stars).
The students enjoyed getting to know the players, collecting autographs, and touring an exhibit of memorabilia outlining the League’s history. They also spoke with Manny Locke of the Buffalo Soldiers, who explained the role his group played in American history.
