The Sankofa Club held the second annual Black History Month Upper School Assembly on Friday, February 15. Nigel Campbell-Christie '19 opened the event by honoring the first black student to attend McDonogh, John Milton Belcher III '71. Delaney Thompson '22 then wowed the crowd with a rendition of Nina Simone's Feeling Good. Tahir Atkinson '20, AJ Davis '19, and De'Angelo Thompson '19 performed spoken word poems that both celebrated the accomplishments and illuminated the struggles of black Americans in the 80s and 90s. Renowned Baltimore poet Black Chakra also performed two poems and spoke with the students about black history and culture through the lens of representation in comic books.
