In 2012, a group of seniors decorated and installed bird houses around Roots Farm. Their hope was to attract feathered friends to help control the pest population on the farm. Over the last 10 years, use and exposure to the elements have left many of the houses in disrepair. This year, Lower School Science teacher Craig Whiteford thought replacing them would be the perfect project for PK to undertake.
The littlest Eagles began painting birdhouses while they studied the letter B. (After all, B is for Bird.) Their curiosity also led them to research the types of birds native to Maryland and McDonogh’s campus. On Friday, February 18, the tiny birders braved some blustery winds to install their avian dwellings around Roots. Now, each time they visit the farm, they’ll see their birdhouses and beam with pride knowing they helped impact Roots’ ecosystem. Perhaps, in 10 years, when they are Upper Schoolers, they’ll return with a new pack of PK students to install a fresh batch of houses.
