Striking a balance between raising successful kids and overparenting was the focus of McDonogh’s Parent Education program on Thursday, March 2. Hosted by the McDonogh Parents Association (MPA), the group was thrilled to welcome New York Times bestselling author Julie Lythcott-Haims for an informative and engaging visit.
During the afternoon, Lythcott-Haims spoke with administrators and shared ways in which schools and parents can effectively partner to help students develop agency. In the evening, more than 200 parents, faculty, and staff gathered in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre to hear Lythcott-Haims lead a thought-provoking discussion on "How to Raise Successful Kids Without Overparenting." Drawing on her experience as a mother, her role as the former dean of freshmen at Stanford University, and research with educators and admissions officers, she offered practical strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary to become healthy, thriving adults. Following her talk, Lythcott-Haims answered audience questions and signed copies of her books How to Raise an Adult, Your Turn, and Real American.
