The Class of 2024 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, June 7 was the bookend to a year that began in much the same way. After the Baccalaureate Ceremony in the Ceres M. Horn Theater with speaker Marty Sataloff, McDonogh’s first-ever Athletic Trainer who is retiring after nearly four decades, the Class of 2024 gathered in Tagart Memorial Chapel, before processing down Chapel Hill to the applause of their former teachers, family, and friends.
Similar to the official opening day of School, the Class of 2024 sat beside Childs Memorial Terrace for the program on a picture-perfect morning. In his remarks, Head of School Dave Farace '87 recalled, "At our Opening Convocation this past August, I played a snippet of the song “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent. The piece reminds us that there are precisely 525,600 minutes in a year and asks a simple yet profound question: 'How do you measure a year?' The song suggests, and I wholeheartedly agree, that you should measure the year in love."
He continued, "To love is to care is to lead. Most people believe that leadership is synonymous with authority, a position of power. At McDonogh, we define ethical leaders as potent caregivers and problem solvers eager to serve their communities. That’s the kind of courageous, urgent love I’m talking about. It is the cornerstone of a life well-lived, dedicated to meaningful service to others."
The ceremony also included remarks from student speaker Finn Alexander, awards, and the conferring of diplomas. The morning concluded the singing of the “Dedication Hymn,” a poignant benediction by the Bridget Collins '90, the Charles W. Britton Director of Character and Service, and the ringing out of the school year by retiring Upper School Faculty Member, Andy Motsko a dedicated teacher for 44 years. As the new alumni and their families celebrated, "Seasons of Love" played in the background.
