More than 130 students from eight area independent schools attended McDonogh’s eighth annual Sankofa Conference on Friday, March 1. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in thought-provoking conversations and activities to encourage reflection and community spirit. With students leading the discussion, everyone was invited to express their viewpoints, discuss differences, and work toward a better understanding of the issues that face the Black community as well as their schools.
In the afternoon, students were welcomed into the Klein Lyceum for a career panel as Sankofa Club leaders Matthias Miller and Chelsea Taylor interviewed Sashi Brown, President of Baltimore Ravens, Erika Seth Davies '94, CEO of Rhia Ventures, and Jinji Fraser '01, Chocolatier and Owner of Jinji Chocolate. The conference was an uplifting and powerful way to end Black History Month. See how McDonogh celebrated the month here.
Sankofa comes from the language of Ghana and means you must reach back to reclaim that which is lost in order to move forward.
