On Friday, April 4, Lower School students got a visit from Mr. Steve, longtime bus driver and volunteer firefighter, who brought along a unique vehicle: his vintage 1980 fire truck. Parked outside for students to explore, the truck gave kids the chance to check out the equipment and try spraying water from the hose.
The truck itself has a bit of a backstory. The 1980 engine, which once served the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company, has a story as winding as the roads Mr. Steve drives each morning. After years of service, the truck was sold off, eventually making its way to a small-town fire house in North Carolina. It could have stayed there quietly forever—but fate had other plans.
In 2012, while visiting family down south, Mr. Steve happened to glance into the open bay of a fire house garage. He couldn’t believe what he saw: the very truck he once knew back in Reisterstown. “I got chills down my spine,” he said.
It took over a decade, a lot of conversations, and even more care, but in 2023, that fire truck came home—thanks to Mr. Steve’s determination and love for both firefighting and community.
