After watching King Gimp, students broke into small groups to discuss the powerful documentary, which told the story of Dan Keplinger, a young man born with cerebral palsy. Students commented about Dan's determination, his struggles, and his accomplishments. They also talked about how the documentary affected them.
Next, they returned to the Ceres M. Horn Theatre to meet Dulaney High School senior John N., the nephew of one of their teachers, who was born with cerebral palsy and has used a wheelchair since he was 4. "There are two places in the world where it's cool to be handicapped," said the affable guest speaker, "Disneyworld and concerts!" John reported that his disability doesn't hold him back. He participates in drama and has been cast in the school play, he enjoys music and concerts, and like any teen, he enjoys hanging out with friends. He hopes to be a journalist and write about rock music.
Overcoming stereotypes has been his biggest challenge over the years. "My sense of humor gets me through," John added. Middle School, he said, was especially difficult because some students made fun of him. Then John added a quick apology, as his middle school audience laughed. Afterwards, students lined up on stage to meet him.
