A Birthday Party for Dr. Seuss

The Lower School library smelled like a bakery on Friday, March 2, as students celebrated Dr. Seuss's 103rd birthday and the 50th anniversary of "The Cat In The Hat" with a "BAKE A CAKE FOR DR. SEUSS CONTEST."

All morning long students wearing handmade "Cat In The Hat" hats paraded through the library to see thirty-seven creatively decorated cakes on display.

Upper School students who recently studied the challenges associated with Dr. Seuss's language in John Van Meter's speech class were the official judges. Awards were presented in the following categories:

  • Daisy-Head Mayzie Award (best use of flowers)
  • The Gerald McGrew Award (best use of animal decorations)
  • The King's Stilts Award (tallest)
  • The 1/Thing 2 Award ( most unusually decorated)
  • The Cat-In-The-Hat Award (most Seuss-ian)

After lunch, the cakes were delivered to the classrooms so that students could sing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Seuss and enjoy the tasty creations.

The contest took place on "Read Across America Day," so the festivities ended when the entire Lower School, including maintenance staff, administrators, teachers and students participated in a 30-minute DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time.

The event was covered by WMAR-TV and will be featured in the Owings Mills Times on Thursday, March 8.
