Earlier this fall, McDonogh's archivist, Frayda Salkin, accompanied alumnus Bill Norwood and his wife, Karen, to the Westminster Churchyard at Fayette and Greene Streets, where the parents of McDonogh School's founder are buried just 20 feet from Edgar Allan Poe. John McDonogh, Sr., the father, was born in 1737 and died in 1809, and his mother, Elizabeth Wilkins McDonogh, was born in 1746 and died in 1808. John, Jr. was the couple's sixth child and first male of twelve children. The Archives has on microfilm letters that John McDonogh, Sr. wrote to John, Jr. in the early 1800's.
