Annual Cardboard Boat Race is Friday, May 26

Big, Bold and made of cardboard, ten distinctive boats, paddled by the students who made them, will take to the waters of McDonogh's pond for the 16th annual Cardboard Boat Race on Friday, May 26 at 2:30 p.m. Student builders, costumed crews, and spectators will march to the pond in the parade of boats, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in front of the John McDonogh Stadium.

Among the crafts racing this year are a Barbie boat, a Mexican sombrero, a Viking ship, and a banana split boat. At the end of the regatta, cardboard trophies will be awarded by faculty wearing cardboard hats. As is tradition, the Poseidon Adventure will be awarded to the most dramatic sinker, while the winner will receive the BOB (best overall boat).

This extracurricular activity, sponsored by the art and science departments, tests Upper School students' skills in practical engineering, applied physics, art, and teamwork. Every team gets the same rations: nine sheets of industrial-grade cardboard, a gallon of glue, a hot glue gun, paint, paint brushes, and three weeks to get ready.

Come and join the fun as Upper School students celebrate the last day of classes before exams. The rain date for this event is Tuesday, May 30; parade at 3 p.m. and race at 3:30 p.m.
