Brown Bears Aid McDonogh 26

According to kindergarten teacher, Hilary Flint, McDonogh School’s Brown Bears (K2) recently learned a valuable lesson about money—how to earn it, how every little bit adds up and how to give it to others in need.

“The Brown Bears have a time on Monday mornings when they share experiences much like show and tell without the ‘show.’ During that time, I often challenge them to ponder a general subject,” explained Ms. Flint. “While talking about money one day, we decided to take a week to do a little extra work at home and earn some extra money for someone in need. When asked whom they wanted to send the money to, they said ‘McDonogh 26.’ I was thrilled that they were still aware of the fact that those children might need help.”

The young students then went home and negotiated a fee for their work, completed the new chore in addition to their normal ones that week, and collected and brought in the money they had earned. Chores included sorting and folding laundry, washing the car in wintertime temps, setting the table, helping make lunch, take care of siblings and feed the dog and cleaning bedrooms, fish tanks and even a grandfather’s house.

“They were so proud of their hard work, because they were allowed to pick the work they wanted to do. This made for some funny stories from both the children and their parents,” chuckled Ms. Flint. “In the end, the students earned $88.13 as well as a lot of pride in little minds who thought they couldn’t do much with small chores.”

In addition to the money they earned, the Brown Bears gave a delegation of 11 upper school students who are headed to New Orleans over Spring Break cards that they had made for McDonogh 26 students. The upper school students plan to deliver the cards and money to McDonogh 26 next week. The delegation will tour the area to see the effects of Katrina, learn some McDonogh history, do hands-on service in the Gretna area and work and visit with the McDonogh 26 community.
