Class of 2015 Graduates to Middle School

Showers and cloudy skies drove the Lower School Closing Ceremony inside the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center on Monday, June 4, but sunny smiles abounded. All attention was on members of the Class of 2015 as they officially graduated from Lower School.

Lower School Head Noreen Lidston paid tribute to the Class of 2015 with her list of much-anticipated class statistics. Among the facts disclosed were:

  • This class has 33 brothers and 27 sisters who attend McDonogh.
  • This group has had 32 relatives graduate from McDonogh.
  • Outside of McDonogh, members of this class attend Chinese School, Hebrew School, CCD classes, and Sunday School.
  • Many students would like to be teachers when they grow-up, while others would like to be: a chef, a fighter pilot, an inventor, president of the United States, an astronaut, an artist, an architect, a police officer, an author, and a photographer. One individual would like to be the owner of the Prime Rib when he is an adult.
  • More than 90% of the class chose their mother, father, or a grandparent when asked to name the person they admire the most.

After presenting the certificates, Headmaster Bo Dixon asked the fourth graders to describe what being a grown-up means. Act more like an adult. Be reponsible. Think of others first. Bo then offered a variation on his annual "milkshake challenge," suggesting that a good way for the rising fifth-graders to act like grown-ups would be to send incoming Headmaster Charlie Britton a letter of welcome.

Musical performances by Lower School students included a recorder serenade, "Summer Please Come Soon," a patriotic medley that was simultaneously signed and sung, a rendition of the traditional "Be the Best of Whatever You Are," and "My Time to Shine" sung by the stars of the day, the fourth-grade.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the rising fifth graders launched their blazers in the traditional toss. The crowd whooped as the jackets landed in the basketball net overhead.
