Cross-Culture

"She was so poised and so wonderful that day. Her classmates were just in awe of her." First-grade teacher Mary Catherine Irving's eyes are alight. She is speaking about one of her students, Janice C., who impressed her class by sharing her culture with them.

Janice is a first-generation American--her parents moved to the United States from Taiwan 15 years ago. Outside McDonogh, she attends both Chinese dancing class and Chinese school.

Janice performed a traditional dance in costume and taught her classmates to write and say the Chinese characters for mom, dad, brother, and sister. "The children in the class were fascinated by her knowledge of the different symbols and way of speaking," says Mrs. Irving.
