Down 16-14 with a little less than three minutes to play, the McDonogh Eagles scored the winning touchdown with a pass that touched one receiver and was caught by another. From then on, the 91st annual McDonogh-Gilman game played at Gilman belonged to the Orange and Black. During the Greyhounds' final drive, the Eagles intercepted a pass to seal the 22-16 victory. McDonogh fans cheered as their team ran out the clock.
Eagles fans gave players a huge boost before the game even began. History teacher Dave Harley, bagpiper Adam G. '10, and the drum corps led a vast, colorful, and very spirited McDonogh contingent over the bridge from Bryn Mawr School to the Gilman field. By the time all the students, siblings, parents, teachers, and alumni made their way to the field, McDonogh fans lined three sides and significantly outnumbered their Gilman counterparts.
"Fans were the 12th man on the field," said Athletic Director Mickey Deegan. They offered plenty of vocal support throughout.
After both teams received congratulations for their mighty effort in one of the area's most storied rivalries, McDonogh teammates and fans rejoiced on the field. Players hugged one another, their parents, their coaches, and their friends. They took turns hoisting and holding the three-foot trophy.
The victory came in the final McDonogh-Gilman football game of Headmaster Bo Dixon's 15-year tenure. Recognizing the significance of the event, Gilman Headmaster Jon McGill honored Dixon in a pre-game ceremony. Afterward, Gilman players and coaches handed Dixon an encased football, which they had signed in his honor.
