Fisher Prep was founded by Dallas Dixon, brother of Headmaster Bo Dixon, when the charter school law passed in New Jersey in 1996. The enactment of the law allowed the 30-year criminal trial lawyer to follow his passion for education and open the doors of opportunity to inner-city kids who were losing the struggle in their daily school lives.
"I always look at it as a cultural collision," remarks McDonogh physical education teacher Jack MacMullan. "The purpose of the Fisher Prep visit is to expose the kids to another slice of life. They come from a world where education isn't respected, isn't cool. Here they spend a day with kids their own age who value education, who are respectful of their teachers and each other in the classroom and out of it. It's a whole different level of trust and respect and by the end of the day you can see them begin to meld into it."
At an orientation in the morning, three Fisher Prep kids are teamed with a McDonogh student who then takes them to their classes and to lunch and introduces the visitors to their friends. In the afternoon they head to the gym for some pickup basketball, swimming, dodge ball and "Rescue."
"We unwind and have fun," says Coach Mac. "They play with and against our kids, it's great." From the exhilarating whoop let out by the Fisher Prep girls as they haul their last castaway, senior McDonogh Camrell G., over the finish line, they agree.
