I really believe that the "6th" man on the court, wrestling mat, pool deck or track, is the McDonogh fan. You all made a huge difference at this past weekend's basketball games. It is obvious that our boys and girls get FIRED UP when they hear the beat of the drum. It gets the athletes pumped up and they respond positively on the court by driving to the hoop, going up against trees for the rebounds, and finding the "open man" for the easy shot. The atmosphere gets electrified.
Some of you may not be aware that the Federation of High school sports has put some modifications on "noisemakers" this year for all teams, both boys and girls, that need to be adhered to or else the referee does have the right to put an end to the noise. So here goes. DRUM 101 states: We can only beat the drum during a "dead ball" interval which is a timeout on the court, foul shot attempt,or the one minute between quarters...and the ten minute halftime. So we can use these times creatively to rally the troops..we want to cheer positively for our team..so saying DE-FENSE...DE-FENSE vocally does work well..what we will NOT do at McDonogh is to break the spirit of the rule of good sportsmanship. We will not CHEER for the opponent as he or she attempts a foul shot (it's obvious that we are being hypocritical), and we will not do anything that will disconcert the shooter, like count out loud the number of times he bounces the ball or any other "tactic" that makes fun at an opponent's expense. What we will do and can do is to cheer positively for Eagles only.
Respecting our opponents and officials is everyone's responsibility. We can rock the nest at home games and do it with class. At our school we will not lower ourselves like so many of the other schools in our league do with rude behavior or obnoxious language. We will not accept the lame excuse that everyone does it. We don't use phrases like, "Overrated." You know why, because someday, and it happens to all teams one day or another, we may hear that same punk phrase thrown our way.
Our teams are frequently "ranked" in the SUN and we should be honored, but not conceited. We should appreciate the recognition, but not gloat about a number next to our school's name. Schools that are "ranked" are there each week because they have been successful in the win column. McDonogh fans are Number 1 because we are not simply concerned about about "winning" the game.
Finally, we have collectively worked hard at gaining a recognition around the league that we do things differently here at our Nest. Let's continue to support our coaches and teams. Get fired up and cheer your hearts out this week. Wear ORANGE...bring a friend to the next game...and have FUN!! Go Eagles!
