The entire K-12 community gathered on Friday, May 12, to honor veteran faculty members and a special guest from McDonogh 26 during the annual Headmaster’s Day ceremony in Alumni Memorial Field House.
After lower- and middle-schoolers were dismissed, nearly 100 upper schoolers received prizes and awards for subject-area achievement, citizenship, leadership, and character. Also announced were the winners of the Sophomore Oratory Contest and performers for the 2007 Stewart Senior Honors Recital. Two departing Japanese exchange students received remembrance gifts.
First on the program was the inaugural presentation of The Irvin S. Naylor ’54 Courage Award. Members of the Class of 1954 established the award two years in honor of Naylor, paralyzed since a riding accident in 1999.
Sally Falcone, a teacher’s assistant at McDonogh’s sister school in Gretna, Louisiana, dabbed tears from her eyes as Headmaster Bo Dixon named her as the recipient. She thanked her extended McDonogh family for the unexpected honor and presented the headmaster with a handmade yearbook, a picture album from McDonogh 26.
Next came tributes to, and rousing ovations for, Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston, Head of Upper School Science Andy Motsko, and sixth grade social studies teacher Ted Scocos for 25 years of service. Extra-loud cheers came from middle schoolers when Mr. Scocos stood to accept congratulations.
Third-grade teacher Vicki McMillan also reached the 25-year milestone but elected not to be recognized during the ceremony.
One more surprise came when representatives from the yearbook announced its dedication for 2006. Head of Upper School English Cynthia Cox clasped her hand to her mouth as two senior yearbook editors began to describe her. Cox was the long-tenured Legacy moderator until two years ago.
The fifth and sixth grade choir, the LS chorus, the jazz band, and the eighth-grade and concert bands provided musical interludes throughout the ceremony.
