In 2004 an estimated $300 billion in adult purchases were child-driven.
In Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture (Scribner, 2004), Boston College sociology professor Juliet Schor analyzes the way the culture of consumption— “junk culture” she calls it—is changing the face of childhood. Even the youngest children are aggressively targeted by advertisers.
So how should parents address the materialism pervading their children’s world? Schor will share her findings and discuss solutions on Tuesday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Her talk, which is sponsored by McDonogh Patrons and The Parents’ Council of Greater Baltimore, is free and open to all.
