Jeffrey Kent, local artist and founder of the Sub-Basement Artists Studio, initially followed his passion with drawings in the old-fashioned black and white composition books while he was a student. He switched careers from fashion design to visual art when he bought an apartment downtown with lots of empty walls. "I couldn't afford to buy big art, so I'll make my own," he decided.
Kent shared his artistic journey with Upper School students during the assembly that kicked off Visual Arts Week, April 14-18. Other events of the week include a silent art auction to benefit UNICEF and the Senior Arts Thesis Exhibition at The Creative Alliance in downtown Baltimore.
After relating his story and showing slides of his studio and work, Kent opened the floor for questions.
Kent said some paintings take up to ten years to finish. He has to maintain a balance between doing art for art's sake and keeping the market in mind so he can pay the studio bills.
He also mentioned an interesting McDonogh connection: Marcellus M. '08 has been to the Sub-Basement Artists Studio because his family is a supporter of Kent's work.
What advice would he give to any aspiring artists in the audience? Kent, who has been accepted to an M.F.A. program for the fall offered the following: "keep your grades tight, go to college, be well-rounded, and stay dedicated to your art."
