Kirsten Adams Named Head of Upper School

Headmaster Charlie Britton has announced the appointment of Kirsten Prettyman Adams as head of the Upper School.

Since 2004, Adams has been head of upper school at the pre-K-12, all-girls Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. Adams played a major role in the implementation of Hockaday’s new faculty evaluation program, the refocus of the school’s boarding program, and the coordination of student and faculty needs during a renovation of the upper school’s academic building.

Adams will succeed Ceil Millar, who is returning to full-time teaching after 12 years as the division head. She will take over for Millar in July.

“Those of you who met Kirsten when she was on campus last month or reviewed her resume and educational philosophy know that she brings outstanding experience as a teacher, coach, and division leader,” said Britton.

Before she became a division leader at Hockaday, Adams held progressively responsible positions at the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., where she taught science, coached lacrosse and field hockey, chaired the science department, and co-chaired the NCS accreditation self-study. She is a former AP Biology test grader and instructor of AP Biology teachers.

Adams holds a bachelor’s degree with honors from Dartmouth College in environmental and evolutionary biology. She earned her master’s degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. A Baltimore native, Adams is a graduate of the Bryn Mawr School. In addition, she has a family connection to McDonogh: her brother, Brian Prettyman, graduated from McDonogh in 1990.
