Enthusiastic and passionate about life and sports, Vicki spoke from the heart and asked the captains to reflect on their ability to lead. She challenged them to have daily goals as well as seasonal goals. Vicki said to the group, "Be the hardest worker at practice, not just in games. Remember when you are out in public that you still represent your school. Make good decisions and be proud to wear the orange and black."
Citing John Wooden's Pyramid of Success, Vicki emphasized the following key values: industriousness, friendship, loyalty, cooperation, and enthusiasm. And these parting thoughts: If not you, then who? If not now, then when?
After thunderous applause for Vicki's presentation, Director of Athletics Mickey Deegan concluded the evening with a few sobering thoughts. Ms. Deegan challenged her coaches and captains to be loyal to each other, to take care of each other especially when it comes to abiding by the training rules. Each athlete signs a contract that says he or she will not use drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
Ms. Deegan acknowledged the temptation to break training rules. "No one said it was going to be easy out there on the weekend social scene," she said. "Sure you will be tempted to drink or smoke, but be different, be courageous, find the chutzpa to go up to a peer and say, 'What are you thinking about? Put the bottle down.' Captains need to step up to the plate and take care of their teammates on and off the field."
Vicki Brick addressed the same subject in her talk when she said, "People recognize you in public...you do represent the school. If you are hanging out with people who are drinking, then those who see you will assume that you too are drinking." Coaches and captains will be addressing this key issue in the weeks ahead.
