Let There Be Peace On Earth (and let it begin with the Lower School)

"It is upon those building blocks of understanding and respect that a future filled with peace and light can stand. This celebration is remarkable in many ways. You will hear your children sing in the languages of France, India, Africa, and the Middle East. Christian children will sing of Hanukkah and Jewish children will sing of Christmas. Muslim children will sing of Diwali and Hindu children of Kwanzaa. All will sing in celebration of peace.

"Let us allow these--our youngest children--to become our teachers today. Let us permit them to help us open our hearts and minds to people and practices that are different, for true peace is born of understanding."

All of the songs were performed with joy and some with spontaneous dancing. Head of Religious Studies John Grega told stories at each of the programs and even Headmaster Bo Dixon also got in on the celebration by asking the students what he should tell his new grandson when he visits him in Montana over the break. He was rewarded with suggestions as varied as "Tell him to love FOOD!" and "Tell him to love his family and friends!" to "Tell him you're the headmaster of McDonogh School and that he has to come here one day!"

The final song "Let There Be Peace On Earth" brought the house down as well as tears to the eyes of many in the audience.
