First-graders in Regina Karwacki's class met llamas Lovey and Sugar this morning in the barn. Fascinated and hardly timid, they fed her handfuls of pellets and petted her neck, as her campus handler, Jodi Hodgkins, instructed.
Jodi has been preparing Lovey, 5, and Sugar, 8, for a possible role in the upcoming Middle School musical production of Good News. While the first-graders already knew some particulars about llamas, Jodi and riding teacher Marquart Garten helped them understand the animals better. Llamas have no upper teeth, for instance, and they don't like to be touched on the face. The children got to see firsthand how much they love pellets. Observed Nicole, after feeding Lovey several handfuls, "It tickles."
