Major Milestones: Campaign goal reached; St. John pledges $10 million toward student center

Headmaster Charles W. Britton announced today that the Becoming Our Best capital campaign has reached its $50 million goal and the school has received a new $10 million pledge from former McDonogh parent Edward A. St. John toward construction of a student life center, to be named in St. John’s honor.

Both announcements represent major milestones for McDonogh.

The $50 million campaign, which concluded almost a year ahead of schedule, is believed to be the largest ever completed by a Baltimore-area independent school. And St. John’s $10 million gift is the largest made to McDonogh by a former parent.

The donor, founder and president of the Baltimore-based St. John Properties, Inc., a full-service real estate and development firm, has provided support to McDonogh for more than 30 years. His relationship with the school began in the 1970s when his children attended.

Said Britton, McDonogh’s headmaster since July 2007: “A gift like this reinforces one of the reasons I came to McDonogh. I am thrilled to be the leader of a school that inspires such generous support.”

St. John’s gift marks the next phase in McDonogh’s fundraising. The new effort will address priorities from the school’s 2002 strategic plan that were not funded in the original Becoming Our Best campaign. They include construction of academic space and the student life center. A 50-year campus master plan, still being refined, will guide these projects.

“The Edward A. St. John Student Center will be a central location that will complement and enhance many aspects of learning for all of our students, from kindergarten through grade 12. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Ed St. John for enabling us to bring students and teachers together in this way.” Britton said.

“Education transforms lives and is the foundation for developing future leaders,” said St. John. “We are proud to support McDonogh School through the funding of the student life center, a place that will be a central influence to stimulate interaction, socialization and learning. I challenge others to join me in making an investment in this great history by providing the resources to help build the leaders of tomorrow.”

Those donors who invested in McDonogh through the Becoming Our Best campaign supported endowment for student scholarships and faculty compensation, construction of four faculty houses on campus, replacement of the 55-year-old swimming pool with an expanded facility, and three years of annual giving for school operating expenses.
