McDonogh Almost Upends Nationally Ranked Curley

The fired-up Eagle squad knew that this was going to be a tough fight. Curley (10-0-1, 4-0) has earned national recognition, currently ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA/adidas soccer poll.

The game featured slow and deliberate play on the Friars' behalf. McDonogh countered Curley’s sluggish attack, aggressively moving the ball deep into the Friars' defensive half. Matt was instrumental in that regard, using his steel foot to move the ball downfield to strikers Wade M. and John P.

After a 61-minute scoreless streak that contained some questionable calls and featured McDonogh playing defensive soccer, Toto collected a through ball in the box and knocked a low shot past Alex, forcing the game into overtime.

It wouldn’t be long after that before the Friars struck again.

Five minutes into overtime, Toto had the ball on right corner of the box. With a nifty left-footed flick, using the outside of his foot, Toto passed it to junior forward Shawn Houseknecht, who booted it home.

John scored McDonogh’s lone goal 17 minutes into the game, when he was the recipient of a Wade cross, knocking a shot in the box from 12 yards out over the head of the Spalding goalkeeper.

Prior to the let down, McDonogh appeared to be in control of the game. The Eagles pressured Curley deep in its defensive third. Matt was an integral part in the attack, claiming possession of the ball in McDonogh’s defensive end, than serving the ball to Eagle attackers down the field. At the 21:00 mark, he struck a ball from the right sideline that barely missed, bouncing across the mouth of the goal.

Curely’s best opportunity to tie the game in the first half when Drew Yates blasted a shot from 25 yards out that hit the top post and fell straight down before Alex grabbed it.

McDonogh travels to Harford County on Wednesday to face the John Carroll squad.
