Girls' Soccer Tops Spalding in Thriller

Last second heroics from a swooping Julie K. saved the day for the second-ranked Eagles.

Julie made a crucial save, extending her body to push a Spalding cross over the end line as time expired, securing a 2-1 victory for the McDonogh Varsity Girls’ Soccer team over the Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills.

Spalding (4-3) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but it was all McDonogh (7-1) in the second half. The Eagles pressed Spalding, maintaining possession and keeping the ball deep in the Cavaliers’ defensive third.

Early in the second, McDonogh saw some good looks at goal, the best chance coming when Dee D. collected a through ball and took a low, skipping shot that the goalie picked up.

Dee, however, redeemed herself, making it a 1-1 game at the 27:00 mark when she hammered home a Brittany T. cross that rolled across the mouth of the goal.

As the offense picked up the pace, the defense followed. A minute after the game-tying goal, Samantha H. cleared a ground ball heading towards the goal to maintain the tie.

With the Eagles running on all cylinders and intensifying the pressure on Spalding, the Cavaliers’ showed signs of collapsing.

A Spalding defender fouled Dee as she went up for a header, setting up a free kick from 25 yards out. This mistake proved costly. Senior Co-Captain Nikki Bell cranked a direct kick that dropped just inside the right goal post, giving the Eagles their first lead of a game, with 22:00 left in regulation.

McDonogh maintained its solid play, seeing two more good chances for goals, but failing to convert on either one.

Spalding’s best scoring opportunity came in the final minute when it took advantage of an out of position Julie, who frantically ran back to the net to stop a ball heading straight for the goal. Fully extended, she pushed the ball out-of-bounds.

The Eagles hope that the victory will be the momentum boost they need as they fly to Boston on Thursday to play Andover High School and Notre Dame Cathedral, pending Hurricane Isabel doesn’t put a damper on their travel plans. The girls’ next home game is on September 24, when they face eighth-ranked IND.
