On Saturday, October 21, the McDonogh community joined approximately 25,000 in Baltimore to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure.
Students, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, and alumni were on hand as part of McDonogh’s 918-member team, the largest in the race. According to team captain Steven Levin, “We never anticipated that so many people would want to participate, and thank goodness we had my sister-in-law Stacey Levin keeping track of all of our registrations and getting packets organized. It just shows that this is a disease that resonates deeply within our McDonogh community."
This was the first time McDonogh formed a team. In a remarkable effort, the McDonogh team earned a first-place finish both in terms of number of registrants and dollars raised. Team members contributed around $40,000 for breast cancer research, education and treatment. Most of that money stays here in Maryland.
At the awards ceremony, many of the McDonogh volunteers joined Bo Dixon to accept the first place prize. The team even made the news with WBAL-TV and the Baltimore Sun.
The Parents Association decided to sponsor this event as a way for the McDonogh community to come together -- across all constituencies. The excitement leading up to and during race day was overwhelming.
Margaret Dabney ‘85, an alumna who ran for the McDonogh team, summed it up well. “I did see a lot of team shirts and received a lot of ‘Go McDonogh’ from the spectators. I saw some of my classmates - some were doing the walk with their children, some just came to the race to cheer on the team and some were running. McDonogh did have an amazing presence at the race.”
That presence included another 40 students, parents, and faculty members staffing the race's only water stop. And members of the Women of Note and the Gentleman Songsters entertained race participants before daylight on the main stage.
Special thanks go to Stuart Rosenfield, father of a middle schooler, for supplying the team shirts to McDonogh at a discount. The shirts were paid for by the Parents Association and Stuart's assistance made having a team shirt possible. He was very patient with each request for more shirts as our team grew. Special thanks also go to Rosalie, a McDonogh seventh grader, for her winning shirt design. The special design attracted many to join the cause.
