McDonogh girls b-ball pulls upset in quarterfinals

Brittany, coming back after spraining her ankle February 9 at Seton Keough, scored 16 points as 11th-ranked McDonogh notched a 45-41 upset over 3rd-ranked Institute of Notre Dame to win in IAAM A Conference quarterfinal action.

Senior captain Rachel B. added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

McDonogh (19-5) will face the winner of the Bryn Mawr-St. Frances game Thursday at 5:30 in the semifinals. The winners of the Mercy-Roland Park and Spalding-Seton Keough matches will play in the other semifinal.

With the win, the Eagles avenged a 63-60 overtime loss to IND on January 24. In that game, McDonogh rallied back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force an extra period, only to lose due to Brooks Webster’s clutch foul shooting in the waning seconds of the game.

In this game, Brittany’s brilliance down the stretch allowed the Eagles to come up victorious. As time expired in the third quarter, the freshman pulled up on the baseline and nailed a jumper to give McDonogh a 32-29 lead.

She followed that with a NBA-range three-pointer with just under three minutes remaining in the game to extend the Eagles’ lead to five points. On the ensuing possession, Mallory knocked down another baseline jumper, this time on the opposite side of the lane, to make the score 42-35. And as an encore, the guard drove through the lane, drew a foul and nailed both free-throws.

Brittany led a McDonogh second-half comeback that came after a dismal second quarter in which the team scored only three points. While the Eagles were controlling the tempo of the game, pushing the ball down-court at a frenetic pace, they were ineffective shooting the ball. McDonogh finished the half shooting 6-30 from the field and 0-8 from behind the three-point line.

However, solid defense from the Eagles kept the game close, as IND only took a three-point advantage, 20-17, into halftime. Rachel had four first-half steals, and pulled-down eleven of her rebounds on the defensive end.

She also contributed to a momentum shift for McDonogh in the third quarter. Braver made two crucial runners in the lane, one that cut the IND lead to 20-19, and the other that put McDonogh in the lead, 28-27, for the first time since the beginning of the second quarter.

IND ends its season at 8-5 in the conference, and 13-6 overall.
