The McDonogh community observed Memorial Day this morning in a solemn ceremony at the school's Memorial Court. Standing before a 1949 monument honoring the 51 alumni who lost their lives in the two world wars, students and teachers paid tribute to all the school's war dead. Alumni Association President Karl Lehmann '84 and Zach G. '06 placed a wreath at the base of the monument.
Headmaster Bo Dixon cited works by historian Stephen Ambrose and reminded students that lessons learned in war can also apply in times of peace. Following him, Director of Religious Studies John Grega told the story of alumnus Howard B. Henry '51, who lost his life serving in Vietnam. He showed students a rubbing of Henry's name from the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. and told them that with every name on the monument is a life story to be recalled and honored.
The Lower School bell choir and chorus and an Upper School instrumental ensemble added music to the tribute.
