McDonogh Junior Eric S. had two assists in the game, while junior captains Matt B. Mike had one goal apiece.
With the win, the Eagles advance to the semifinals, and will travel to fourth-ranked Loyola (13-1-2, 17-1-2) on Thursday, in the hopes they can advance to the finals for the sixth consecutive time under Coach Steve Nichols.
McDonogh didn’t get on the board until midway through the first half, when steel-toed junior Matt slotted an Eric through ball past the Mt. St. Joe goalkeeper at the 17:06 mark.
The Gales' only opportunity to tie came with 4:00 left in the first half when # 20 nailed a ball with the side of his foot from the right edge of the penalty box. Goalkeeper Alex H., making one of his three saves on the day, leaped in the air, fully extending his body to grab the ball.
McDonogh held onto its 1-0 lead for some 47 minutes, until Eric crossed the ball to Mike, who ripped a shot that hit off the goalie and tickled into the net.
The Eagles had several opportunities throughout the game to increase the lead. Late in the first half, Tyler K. fired a shot that missed wide, and at the 5:20 mark John P. on a Mike cross. Late in the second, Matt nailed a shot that ricocheted off the Gales’ keeper. The ensuing rebound from Mike had the same fate.
While McDonogh created opportunities, the Gales seemed sluggish. Many times throughout the first half, Mt. St. Joe defenders passed the ball among themselves, taking their time in pushing the ball forward.
Senior defenseman Tyler S. attributed a defensive adjustment to the cause of the Gales’ offensive shutdown.
“Our outside midfielders on put more pressure on their outside backs, forcing them to make a lot of long, bad balls,” he said.
This strategy, something the Eagles have not been doing in their previous two games, might prove to be the adjustment that puts McDonogh back in the championship game, and its bad luck back in the closet.
“This is the real Eagle team,” Tyler S. said about Tuesday’s performance. “If we can keep stepping on our [opponent’s] backs, we can win the championship.”
