McDonogh Wrestling is Top of the Heap

McDonogh's wrestling team (23-3) is as strong as ever, coming off a big win against rival Mt. St. Joe to clinch its third straight league title. Digital Sports chronicles the meet.

Head coach Pete Welch praises his team as "full of great kids who happen to be great wrestlers, as well. These guys have all been wrestling together for a long time, sharing common team and individual goals. If these guys never won another match, I am sure they would still enjoy hanging out together."

This team is likely to continue winning and enjoying the remarkable camaraderie. Ranked #113 out of all public and independent high schools, the Eagles have sought out top-level competition all season. They won against the #1- ranked teams in New Jersey and Virginia.

And there's a definite bright side to their few losses, according to Welch. The Eagles gained great experience and confidence competing against perennial champions from Blair Academy. In addition, they came within three points of upsetting #5 St. Edwards of Ohio.
